Alexander, Lou Sr.
A teacher and coach at the University of Rochester for 35 years, he coached an unbeaten basketball team (1941-42) and an unbeaten baseball team (1945). He won 247 games in basketball, 145 in baseball. The UR Alexander Palestra is named after him.

Best, Al
The all-time winningest coach in Section V girls basketball history (389-150), he coached 25 years at Greece Arcadia and Greece Athena, winning five sectional titles. He is a member of the New York State Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and a charter member of the Section V Basketball Hall of Fame.

Boeheim, Jim
Born and raised in Lyons, he made the Syracuse University basketball team as a walk-on and started for three years in the backcourt with All-American Dave Bing in the mid-1960s; he is the winningest coach in school and Big East Conference history.

Borrosh, Joe
The winningest coach in Section V boys soccer, he retired after 32 seasons. The Pittsford Mendon legend had 498 victories, second all-time in the state. His six state titles are a record, and his 16 Section V championships are second to Red Creek's Don Hartley (17).

Carey, Bill
A highly successful coach and administrator for 44 years, he coached Waterloo to two section V titles in baseball and three in basketball. He won 162 basketball games as RIT's coach and served as athletic director at both RIT and Nazereth, where he retired in the spring of 1998.

Chamberlain, H. David 1997
Clark, Gary
A fixture as Fairport High’s swim coach for 25 years, his teams finished as the top-ranked team in the state 13 times, and won an incredible 18 consecutive Section V and Monroe County championships. More than 60 swimmers, known as “Clark’s Sharks,’’ went on to earn All-America honors. Clark retired in 1999.

Clifford, Sarah Jane
A gymnastics standout at Pittsford in the early 1970s, Clifford has operated The Gymnastics Training Center of Rochester for 14 years; she was responsible for bringing the Olympics gymnastics qualifier to town two years ago and has been heavily involved in the Special Olympics.

Commisso, Frank
Head golf pro at Irondequoit Country Club from 1933 to 1980; won the Western New York PGA Championship 10 times and the Western New York Senior PGA six times; among the original inductees to the WNY PGA Hall of Fame in 1976.

Costanza, Vito
A legendary coach at Edison Tech in football, basketball and baseball in the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, he also was an exceptional and devoted physical education teacher at the school. Now retired, he was named Section V Coach of the Year in boys basketball before the award was split into several classes.

Coughlin, Tom
First coach the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars; the only NFL expansion team to make the playoffs four of its first five seasons; graduate of Waterloo High School; played football at Syracuse University, and began his head coaching career at RIT in 1970.

Daly, Ben
Coached East High to five Section V basketball titles and four Section V soccer titles; coached high school basketball All-Americans Al Butler and Walter Dukes; became known as the “The Godfather of Soccer”.

DeBell, Jim
A great coach at Jefferson High School for 35 years; his baseball teams won three Section V titles, and his soccer, cross country and basketball teams won many city championships; pioneer in the development of physical education programs for severely challenged students.

Downey, Tom
Nine-time Section V boys basketball Coach of the Year had 437-159 career record in 28 seasons with Canisteo, Dansville and Livonia. Won four Section V titles and 15 Livingston County titles. Passed away in 2003 at age 50.

Fennell, Mike
The winner of Maj. Donald Holleder Award for courage was one of the most successful baseball coaches in Section V history. A former star athlete at Fairport High School and Le Moyne College, Fennell was drafted in the 1Oth round by the New York Yankees and spent several seasons in their farm system. Fennell waged an inspirational 18-month battle with non-smoker's lung cancer.

Retired last March with a 459-219 record in 33 seasons as Fairport High's boys basketball coach. He led the Red Raiders to one Section V title and 12 Monroe County League Championships.

Gerace, Tony
Legendary swimming and soccer coach for 25 years at Marshall High School; Marshall's pool opened in 1939 and Gerace was the school's only swim coach until retiring in 1964; from 1941-1952 his swim team had a streak of 120-plus straight dual-meet victories and won 11 consecutive city titles and 15 Section V titles; his soccer team won 4 straight city and sectional championships.

Gibson, Brenda
Coached Pittsford Mendon girls soccer team from its inception in 1974 until 1990, compiling 211-56-12 record. Won four Section V titles and state championships in 1984, '86 and '88. First Empire State Games girls soccer coach, named National High School Coach of the Year in 1988.

Gurnett, Terry
The Spencerport High graduate is the winningest coach in NCAA Division III women’s soccer history, with a 318-101-45 record in 27 seasons. Gurnett led UR to national titles in 1986 and ‘87 and was selected NCAA Coach of the Decade for women’s soccer in the 1980s. His teams have been ranked in the national top 25 every year for 21 seasons and made 17 consecutive trips to the postseason.

Keating, Maurice "Marty"
The Pittsford girls swim coach for 30 years, he has produced 43 collegiate All-Americans and 12 Section V championship teams. He is the chairman of the USA Swimming Niagara District Outreach program for minorities and poor youths.

Kleemann, Werner
The Section V Football Hall of Famer coached Rush-Henrietta from 1972-85, then again in 2004. Compiled career mark of 99-28-4. Also served as athletic director during the merge between R-H Sperry and Roth.

Lanning, Dave
Fairport coaching legend finished 467-155 with 14 division titles and three Section V championships in baseball and 64-21 with one state championship and four Section V crowns in football.

McKee, Paul
The former Syracuse University and Washington Redskins end started the Rush-Henrietta football program in 1964 and compiled a 55-5-1 record. He served as R-H athletic director from 1968-85 and is a member of the Section V Football Hall of Fame. Died in 1999.

Murray, Dennis "Dip"
Known as the "John Wooden of city high school basketball"; coached and taught at Madison High for 45 years; guided Madison to five Section V championships; an excellent basketball player and a member of the Rochester Centrals, forerunner of the NBA Rochester Royals.

Murray, Don
The wrestling coach at Brockport State for 28 years, he has led the Golden Eagles to five national titles and coached 96 All-Americans and 21 national champions. The national coach of the year twice, his Eagles have won 22 conference championships.

Nealon, Ann
Started the RIT women's tennis program in 1971 and is still the coach, compiling a 189-87-3 record. Nealon is a longtime teaching professional with the United States Professional Tennis Association and head tennis pro at Oak Hill Country Club.

Neer, Mike
The all-time winningest coach in University of Rochester men's basketball history (418-276), he led the Yellowjackets to the 1990 NCAA Division III championship and back to the title game in 1992. He has coached at U of R for 27 seasons, leading the Yellowjackets to 14 postseason appearances. He's 17-7 in NCAA Tournament play.

A successful high school coach in Rochester who went to lead Brockport State to the Final Four and became the winningest coach in the Continental Basketball Association history.

Peek, Gloria
Established the Montgomery Boxing Club in 1988; national and international box coach; one of five amateur coaches in the nation to receive the USA Weekend’s Most Caring Coach Award.

Perkins-Carpenter, Betty
Taught swimming and diving to generations of Rochestarians, including Olympic diving medalist Wendy Wyland. She is nationally recognized for developing fitness programs for senior citizens.

A legend in the City-Catholic League, Rich has coached for over 25 years in both girls basketball and girls track. Among the track stars this West High graduate has tutored: Deresa Walters, Lisa Taylor and Kim Batten, world record-holder and Olympic silver medalist in the 400-meter hurdles.

Won a record nine Section V basketball titles at East High. He led the Orientals to at least one sectional championship in four consecutive decades.

Santini, Don
Legendary football coach who won seven Section V titles in 32 seasons at Le Roy and Fairport and is Section V's all-time winningest coach. His 1992 Fairport went unbeaten and won the state title.

Shapiro, Bruce "Murph"
Longtime MCC basketball coach and athletic director; star quarterback and basketball guard for Franklin High School who later went on to play basketball at the University of Miami; inducted into the Rochester Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.

Stark, Pat
Eastern college Division III Football Coach of the Year at the University of Rochester in 1970; scored a then-New York State record 78 points for Syracuse’s Vocational High School; on the staff of SU’s national championship team in 1969.

Steitz, George
Recorded 408 wins as Penfield's boys varsity soccer coach from 1954 to 1984, ranking among the top five winningest coaches in the nation. Led the Chiefs to six Section V titles. He won more than 300 games in baseball and also coached softball, basketball and skiing. He is a charter member of the Penfield Athletic Hall of Fame and a member of the Ithaca College and New York State Coaches halls of fame.

Member of Rochester’s Boxing Hall of Fame; won the Western New York Light-Weight Championship in 1939 and became known as the “The Jewish Buzz Saw” by area boxing fans; inducted into the Rochester Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.

The longtime Fairport High girls swimming coach compiled a 210-12 record, led the Red Raiders to six consecutive state titles from 1985-90 and won 12 consecutive Section V championships from 1979-90. Her teams finished unbeaten in dual meets 12 times. Thomas retired in 1992.

Longtime director of the Flower City Track Club; has been influential in helping high school track athletes secure scholarships; served as coach, technical director and manager for teams selected by USA Track and Field; also coached the sprinters and jumpers at Franklin High during the school's run of success in the 1990s.

Weise, Larry
All-around star athlete at East Rochester; played college basketball at St. Bonaventure, and later went on to become the Bonnies all-time winningest basketball coach with a 202-90 record from 1961-73; made it to the NCAA Final Four in 1970.
